DIAMONDS MINING

KWANGO RIVER PROJECT

The Kwango River drains the Chitamba-Lulo Kimberlite Cluster in Lunda. Diamonds are known to occur within the active river channel as well as on flats and terraces within the river's flood plain.

The alluvial/fluvial potential of the river has never been tested using modern exploration techniques although artisanal diggers have been exploiting the river's diamondiferous gravel deposits for decades.

In 2006 and 2007, a total of 909 manual pits and 35 excavator pits were excavated and 136 mud/auger drillholes were drilled. The objective of the 2006-2007 pitting/drilling program was to obtain a preliminary understanding of the extent, thickness and depth of the gravel horizons which occur within the Kwango River flood plain.
